Stoke Newington School FC 3-3 Bridge Academy

Another freezing start to the weekend, yet nothing that a bacon sandwich and cup of coffee couldn't cure, and so it was out onto Hackney Marshes to face Bridge Academy. Despite the early start, someone had forgotten to tell the Bridge kit man the kick off time. So it took another hour before both teams could take to the pitch. But for all the waiting around, those parents who braved the cold were treated to a fantastic game of football. Our goals came from Waiel (2) and Jaden. However, stand out man of the match today was George Gibbs who put in a fine display in midfield.

A game we should have won, but we were happy to have taken a point and everyone left having enjoyed another few hours out on the very beautiful surrounds of Hackney Marshes.

Despite a lack of goals at both ends, this game saw us grind out another point, this time against league leaders A Class. It was always going to be a tight affair, our opposition unbeaten and flying high, whilst our lads have hit a rich vein of form. Sal and Stan performed brilliantly again at the back, our midfield worked hard and Ekow kept chasing and threatening throughout. We told the boys after the game it's not always about scoring tons of goals and winning by rugby scores - sometimes we have to get our heads down and work hard for eachother as a team.

And that's exactly what we done tonight. Leaving with a point was hugely satisfying. Cal pulled off a couple of fine saves at the end of the game, ensuring a draw and another point to keep us in the top division for next season's campaign. Well done everybody!

We never thought we'd beat our U11s score-line from last night, but the thirteen we scored tonight punctuated what became a bit of a training exercise for us. Five up in fifteen minutes (the highlight of which was a towering Waiel header from a corner), we rolled on and off more than we'd ever done before. Everyone seemed to play in every position tonight and at one point we pondered whether we'd send the goalie up front for the second half. Fair play to Hilal Rangers, who despite the scoreline, did have a few decent players, particularly their nippy left winger who deserved a goal after all his endeavour. Just as pleasing as all the goals we scored, we were more than happy that our defenders done such a great job and kept us a clean sheet.

We are already thinking about next season and sit at the top of the second division with promotion at the forefront of our minds. If all goes to plan then the last few games should get us there, but we will still have to work extremely hard to get there. But for now we'll let the lads revel in the glory of tonight's massive win, they fully deserve it.

RECREATIVO U11s 10-3 Soccerscool 16.1.12.

It seems like ages since our last game, but everyone is raring to go as we piled into the dressing rooms and sat around for the team talk. Everyone's up for this one, this fixture never fails to excite both the players and spectators - two teams who like to pass the ball around. And tonight's match lives up to all expectations. Soccerscool seem to have it drilled into them to play neat one, two-touch passing for which they should be applauded. However, Recreativo are equal to this style of play, but with the added strength of Ekow Coker (a mini Drogba at times!) spearheading a very quick counter attack. He scored six tonight, but offered more than just goals as he created plenty of chances for the rest of our boys.

Marlais played some deft passes, brilliant through balls to our front man and grabbed a fantastic volley with the outside of his boot early on. Felipe acted like a pivot in midfield, stylish play that opened up more attacks from Recreativo. With Sal opening his scoring account for the season with two great goals and Stanley getting up the pitch to get his first goal of the season, it became a bit of a rout. However, hats off to our opposition who didn't let their heads drop and kept chipping away at us.
Our best performance of the season so far, with goals coming from everywhere, the team really working hard for each other and everyone keeping to what we had asked them to do. Hats off to you lads!

A tough encounter for our U13 boys, representing Stoke Newington School FC against league leaders Cardinal Pole. Once against, Cardinal had sent a team of giants, but there wasn't much in it, particularly the second half that saw our lads equal them all over the pitch. Hard luck fellas.

A superb performance from our lads saw us go five points clear at the top of the table - a fantastic way to start the new year. We had eagerly awaited this game, a chance to cement our position as division leaders. Confident, energetic and dominant throughout the first half, Recreativo turned on the style. Waiel stood out as Man of the Match tonight, not only bagging all six goals, but putting in such a brilliant performance it can not be long before his beloved Arsenal come knocking!

However, five up at half time, we were a little disappointed to only get one extra goal in the second half. Maybe we were getting a little greedy hoping for double figures. Still, Regents had barely three shots on goal the whole game. Another clean sheet for Milvydas and another three points for the Under 13s. Well done all involved.

A fantastic end of year training session was followed by a special Christmas match, Recreativo vs the Parents! Great fun was had by all, the parents winning 4-3 (although someone pointed out the sides were uneven with 17 players on the parents team at one point!).
Luckily, the young ones took it all in their strides as the parents went off celebrating at the end and after the handshakes and jubilation we finished the session with our customary penalty competition, Oisin once again proving he's got the hottest shot in the team!

We return for training on Sunday Jan 8th. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from all of us at Recreativo Football Club.

Haringey Cosmos 2-1 RECREATIVO U13s 16.12.11.

Not too much festive cheer tonight as Recreativo threw away a game that we should have won. But fair play to Haringey Cosmos, who in the end were worthy winners who played decent football and took their chances.

Despite going one up after Storm slotted the ball home after a lovely one-two with Waiel, we failed to capitalise and let Cosmos back into the game. We have some big players in the team now, but still lack the strength to dominate, put our mark on the game. It's probably a bit old school to say it, but we're too soft at times, when we should be going out and bossing it...
We were short of technical ability tonight, smashing the ball forward when a deft touch or subtle pass would do. And a few referee decisions didn't help our cause. We were warned to substitute Waiel or face a red card after the ref accused him of throwing the ball at him (!?!), Waiel merely throwing the ball to the centre spot after we conceded. And Milvydas claimed he was fouled as he saved on the line, the Haringey striker bundling both the goalkeeper and ball across our line, 1970s style.
Still at the end of the day, not too many complaints from us. Tonight at least we hold up our hands and say we didn't deserved to win.

So we end the year a little bit under the weather despite a good season up til now. On a positive note, the boys are still desperate to go forward and climb into the higher division. A big win and a much improved performance next game should get us back up there.

Primrose Hill 0-2 RECREATIVO U11s 5.12.11.

This game marks the halfway point in our season. And it's positive vibes all round as the boys bounce out of the dressing room full of energy and eagerly charge across the windswept pitch. Ritchie had his Ronaldo top under his Recreativo shirt to fight the chill and it certainly worked some magic as he jinked left and right with a confident and agile display. Aaron darted in from the wing, teasing the Primrose defence and put us one up after pouncing on a rebounded ball.

Sal was a rock at the back and dependable throughout the game, clearing the ball, breaking down and nullifying any Primrose attack. Superb! And we set about the second half more or less camped in the opposition half, Ekow adding some good old fashioned strength going forward. We were overjoyed to see Rory come off of the bench and put us further ahead, a brilliant finish after some excellent build up play.

Felipe worked tirelessly in midfield, as did Jem, and Stanley and Freddie had a fine game. As always, Jackson twisted and turned, looking threatening every time he had the ball. And finally we can thank Cal for pulling off a brilliant diving save in the final minute to keep a clean sheet and send us all off to the chip shop with smiles on our faces. Once again, top marks to coach James and all the parents who came out on a freezing evening to support the boys.

Stoke Newington School FC 3-0 Jack Petchey Academy

Once again, eight of the eleven boys representing Stokey this morning were Recreativo boys. A good win with goals coming from Waiel, Jaden and Louis. Another clean sheet for Kobi too. It should have been a more comprehensive win, Stokey missing two penalties against a superb keeper (who represents the district team).

Still, once again, the rain held off and the dads along the line witnessed another assured and confident performance. Well done lads.

RECREATIVO U13s 1-0 Regents Park 29.11.11.

The boys are in a buoyant mood as the big strike is looming and school is closed tomorrow. We thread our way along the streets around the Emirates, Arsenal and Man City fans hurrying to tonight's game, hands in pockets, braced against the chill. Every available parking space along Market Road has already been taken as council workers have taken over the street in readiness for Wednesday's industrial action - but we manage to squeeze into the very last spot and the lads pile out of the car and into the changing rooms.
A strange game unfolds which sees us huff and puff, every player squeezed into the middle of the pitch chasing the ball like we are back in the infants! Thankfully Soulaiman finds the back of the net with a deft chip over the keeper and we go in at half time in front.

The second half is played out with the lads having found their feet, Soulaiman and Waiel linking up superbly.

Jaden has three clear chances, each which he sends wide (we all have our off days!) and despite a few more efforts on goal we seem to limp home to the final whistle, Regents having hardly any shots on our goal, but Recreativo nervous that only one goal is never really enough. Not the best performance but a sign of a good team that we still took the points and go back to the top of the division. Nice one.

Gary Speed R.I.P.

James Brown our U11s manager writes:

One minute you’re running round a park training with 20 young footballers and the next you get back to your car and find texts and calls coming into your phone telling you a player you know and admire is dead. You drop the boys off home and then sit by the side of the road crying your eyes out. If ever there was a player you could point to as a role model it was Gary Speed. Maybe one of those kids I train, or the boys they play against, or any other kid running over muddy parks all over the country this morning will become as great a footballer and sportsman as Gary Speed. That’s what you hope for, but they’ll have to go some way to achieve that.

Right now Twitter, Sky Sports and 5Live are over-run with the outpouring of grief for this admirable man. Many are assuming, in the vacuum of details and in the light of Stan Collymore’s open portrayal of his depression, that Speedo was depressed. But as far as I know that’s just speculation, whatever has lead Gary to take his life is probably more personal than illness.

Last night I was stood in the Leeds United manager’s office Elland Road with the manager, Simon Grayson, and my two closest Leeds United supporting friends. One of them is Gary’s friend and agent. All four of us have known Gary Speed to differing degrees. None of us could have predicted that 12 hours later Gary would be found dead at home by his wife, Louise. The manager’s area, reception, and players lounge at Elland Road are covered with pictures of the great players who made their names under Don Revie, Howard Wilkinson and David O’Leary. It wasn’t always that way, when Howard Wilkinson, arrived at the club at the end of the 1980s he insisted they take down the images of the Revie legends who were proving too great a team for subsequent groups of players to measure themselves against.

It was Wilkinson’s aim to create a new generation of players who would create a name for themselves. Gary Speed was a vital, vibrant part of the success Wilkinson steered the club to. Of all the pictures of the great Jack Charlton, free-kick expert Ian Hart, midfield dynamo David Batty, and the images of the British Forces soldiers in their Leeds kits the one I looked at longest yesterday was the group image of Howard Wilkinson’s squad celebrating their winning the old League Division One championship.

If Batty was the tenacity in that great midfield, Speed was the pace and the cutting edge, McAllister was the passer, Strachan pulled the strings, but it was Speedo streaking forward with the ball that was the youthful threat the team needed. With Batts, Speedo represented the present and also the future. His recent success after a wobbly start as the Welsh national football manager has given similar hope and optimism to a nation for whom footballing success has been sparse. He was instrumental in helping Leeds United recapture glory and there’s few who could argue that he hadn’t started something significant with his young Welsh team.

Back in the early 90s at Elland Road some fans would mock Speedo for growing his hair long, he could have come out in a pink afro for all I cared, so long as he made up the fourth place in the fantastic midfield line-up and carried the game to the opposition like he did. His friend Ryan Giggs might have had that added elan to his play that won him the extra-attention but Speed was pretty much the all-round midfielder, as reflected in the quality of clubs he played for and the men like Alec Ferguson and Fabio Capello who coveted him. When I think of Gary on the pitch I think of a player who works and runs constantly, who can score all sorts of goals.

Those who knew Gary Speed very well, his friends and colleagues in and out of football, are as shocked as the rest of us who simply admired him. But it didn’t matter if you played for Wales, Manchester United or were just a fan of football he would have time for you. He was an inspiration. Everyone who ever met him will tell you what a nice guy he was but that’s the word I would use Inspiration.

We are so often taught to respect our elders that it becomes strange when the footballers in the team you support are younger than you and you find yourself admiring them. Go on twitter or turn on the TV and you will see new and old quotes from the greatest British footballing talent of the last 25 years paying tribute. Sky will be telling you about his appearance records, transfer fees and fitness. I will leave them to deliver the stats and quote the tributes.

For me this is more personal. I’ve been where his family are right now. My mum took her own life in February 1992 and when Leeds won the League that year it was the first time I felt happy. Maybe that’s why I’m still sitting here in tears. Speed was part of something that’s bigger than just football results and performances. He contributed to something that made people feel their lives were better because of it. He was a good man who was good to people and you can’t really ask for any more than that. Most suicides leaving you feeling ‘it’s just not right’ but some deaths are sadly inevitable. Gary Speed’s wasn’t, his death is truly shocking and has rocked the world of football and beyond. He will be painfully missed by those that knew him, those that enjoyed what he gave to the world of sport and for those young kids legging it round the parks this morning hopefully his passing will prompt them to take some time to find out about him.

People like Gary are the reason I still play football, still travel hundreds of miles to watch my team, still get up in the rain and go and train ten year olds after 6 hours sleep. They are what is great about football. He played to the best of his ability and with enthusiasm. Gary Speed was a good man I admired. I can’t say any more than that.

Blimey! This was a game alright...goals galore, full bloodied tackles, incredible saves, penalties, so many twists and turns that the parents had to remind us of the full time score at the end!

n after an early Crown penalty,

we continued playing an exciting brand of football. Felipe and Jackson pushed forward at every opportunity and we were rewarded with some great attacking play with a beautiful drive from Marlais, 1-1, game on!

Crown & Manor have always been a strong side, but tonight we matched them in every department.

Tackles were flying in and shots smashing the back of the net as Jackson pounced to strike two belters home. Aaron slotted home after a neat move and with only seconds to go it looked like we were on to a well fought victory. However, a high ball in our area was struck by Sal's hand. He'd had a sudden rush of blood to the head, one of them crazy moments and the ref blew for a penalty. It was a horror moment for the lad as he's been consistently fantastic for Recreativo in every game he's ever played for us, but at the end of the day we still came away with a decent score draw and everyone had given their all.

A Manager's Notes. James Brown writes: "Friday was a very important

result for us because once again we took the game to a team that finished higher than us last year and I was delighted to get a point.

There were excellent performances throughout the team. Everyone played their part and I think all of you responded to the pre-match call to work hard for each other, play the ball round quickly and take the responsibility to get something from the match.

Jackson, Arron and Ekow all performed excellently in the positions they filled. We conceded less goals than the previous two games and two were penalties.

Jackson worked exceptionally hard to go and fight for the ball and be our first line of defence and he was rewarded with two goals. He looked full of aggression, confidence and skill and that's been his best performance this year. Man of The Match for me.
Arron, Jimmie and I have been waiting patiently for a game in which Arron could show us what he is capable of and tonight was it. In the last game Jackson came on as substitute and set a goal up and in this game Arron went one better, providing a good assist and then scoring a very cool goal.
Like Arron Freddie also looked lively in central midfield when he came on so well done Freddie.
This game I made sure I didn't change the defence during the game and I think that and Ekow's ability and height in goal made us stronger at the back. Jem, Sal and Stan all worked hard as ever and were also key in winning the ball to help set our goals up.

The midfield continue to battle hard and long and it's no surprise when we see Ritchie

Felipe and Marlais coming off battered, bruised and exhausted. They have to cover more ground than anyone and Marlais claimed another well taken finish after a great pass from Felipe. That whole move for our first goal from Jem and Ritchie winning the ball at left back, Jackson taking the defender away from Marlais with his run down the left, and Felipe playing Mar in was really excellent team play and a great example of how good you boys can be. Frequently last night you played with genuine class and commitment.

Being in a team often means surrendering what you want to do yourself and doing something for the group instead. There is no 'I' in the word 'Team'. With this in mind a big round of applause is owed to new captain Ekow who, despite screaming to come out, made a lot of valuable saves and good pitch long service to the strikers. And also to Cal who's noisy touchline encouragement was actually a great help to me and Jimmie and brilliant to hear from someone who didn't get a game. It might be hard to understand but you can help your team in all sorts of ways. And Cal's genuine passion and support for you guys on the pitch was uplifting.

All in all that was probably the best performance since we hammered a team 5-1 last year.

Well done boys, let's keep this spirit alive and crack on with enthusiasm for the next game. An important result.

Stoke Newington School FC 3-0 Bishop Challoner

Recreativo had seven players representing SNSFC out bright and early on the Marshes again this morning (the other four players also coming from teams in our league). Once again all goals were scored by Recreativo players (that's now eight goals in the two last games that Reccy lads have scored) - Waiel bagging two and Jaden smashing home a long range effort late on. Well done everyone!

We had told the boys to get there earlier than usual today. To have everyone in the dressing room, focused and switched on for this crucial encounter. If only our opposition had done the same!

After a prolonged warm up which our boys carried out like true professionals, we took to the pitch in driving rain having seen Belsize's yellow shirts emerge from the dressing rooms.
However, only four Belsize players showed and after waiting another 20 minutes their manager offered us the points. We decided to mix the teams up and played another 20 minute friendly (Jaden scoring against Recreativo!). Finally the rest of Belsize turned up and after a gentle dressing down from both managers we played another 25 minute friendly, Recreativo winning 1-0.

We realise every now and again there will be a few problems in this league, but are thankful that our players are always punctual, fully equipped and raring to go. A big thanks to both players and parents who had got there early and stood waiting in the grey misty rain. Not an ideal way to win three points, but we'll have them all the same.

Once again Recreativo U13s had six players (Waiel, Sol, Storm, Kobi, Ollie & Jaye) representing Stoke Newington School FC out nice and early at Hackney Marshes. All five goals were scored by Recreativo boys, Waiel in brilliant form with a well deserved hat-trick, Storm heading home from a corner and Jaden slotting home to give us a 5-1 win.

We were particularly pleased with the boys for turning out so early at the Marshes after a tough game last night at Market Road. Well done to all involved!

Lyndhurst 0-3 RECREATIVO U13s 4.11.11.

Dominant from the start, confident and committed, this performance saw the U13s go top of the table. More than anything, the team seems to have found the perfect balance between battling defenders and a fast moving attack. Three minutes in, Storm slotted home his first of the season. Soulaiman and Waiel added two great goals to the tally before the break. We had asked the boys for a professional attitude in the pre-match team talk and they went through their warm up with a mature and focused manner. They carried this attitude with them to the pitch tonight which was great to see.
At 3-0 up we were delighted to see the team knocking the ball around. All three subs came on and slotted into whatever position they were asked too without any fuss, without any moaning and all did a fabulous job. Ollie played some delightful balls in from right midfield and Sol was unbeatable at the back. There's times when all that training, all those early sunday mornings in the rain, pays off. A beautiful free flowing move in the second half was simply quite breath-taking. Never mind Xavi, Iniesta, Messi and Villa, we saw Stephenson, Goldblatt, Gregory and Hassan move the ball from goalmouth to goalmouth with as much skill and flowing movement of anyone raised on the training pitches of Barcelona.
However, it was Soulaiman who stood out for us tonight. Running non-stop, forever wanting the ball, endless energy and a brilliant attitude, he's turned out to be a very welcomed signing to our club.

Games like this make it all worth it. Football like this makes it all worth it.

After a three week break, it took a bit of time for Recreativo to get going. And after conceding with a minute to go until half time we wondered if the boys would rise to the second half challenge. But they came out and began to take the game by the scruff of the neck, challenging and winning every ball, pushing forward like a cavalry in full charge. Ekow, once again, was charging through brick walls. However, a little bit more distribution, bringing others into play, would have been a better choice at times.
Coming back from 1-0 down to go 2-1 up seemed to go to our heads as the game opened up with everyone charging forward. It allowed Iseldon back in, who scored a couple of fortunate goals on the break, getting level with us and then reclaiming the lead.

Still, we can't fault the boys for once again putting in a 100% effort against a team who possibly had a slight physical edge over us. Despite the result we can look back on some excellent flowing football, particularly in the second half. Hard luck lads.

As it was half-term and Recreativo had a break in the hectic league calendar, myself and Storm took the opportunity to spend a few days in Madrid. A great chance to brush up on our Spanish and soak up the atmosphere in this football obsessed city. First stop: Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, probably the most jaw-dropping football stadium in the world. If you ever get the chance, then you must visit this stadium. Apart from the historical artefacts and club memorabilia, the endless cups and trophies gathered over the years by this most decorated club, the actual stadium is the most impressive football arena anywhere on the planet. Five steep levels that currently holds over 85,000 spectators.
We were lucky enough to see Real Madrid vs Villareal on our final night in the city, a game that didn't kick off until 10pm. The Spanish do like to do it different over there! Real won 3-0 (with goals from Di Maria, Kaka and Benzema).

South of the city, down by the River Manzanares, lies the Estadio Vincente Calderon, home of the noisy neighbours, Athletico Madrid. Despite mixed fortunes over the years, Athletico have huge support. Their recent signing from Porto, Falcao, is the leading light in the team. Ex Arsenal player Jose Antonio Reyes is also a crowd favourite. We saw them get a 1-1 draw against Mallorca, their loud support cheering and singing the full 90 minutes non stop.We also visited the grounds of the other two teams in the city, Rayo Vallecano (who have been promoted this season into the top flight) and Getafe in the furthest suburbs south of Madrid. Despite smaller stadiums, both teams are fiercely supported by their communities, adding to the rivalry felt across this city.
Overall we had a great time soaking up the Spanish football culture. We wondered if any of Recreativo would be plying there trade one day in Madrid, we know we have plenty of dedicated footballers in the team who will certainly make it big one day!
The majority of our U13s are off to Barcelona with the school early next year, visiting the Camp Nou. One of you guys will have to write a report for our website and get some pictures. And remember, keep practising your Spanish!

This was quite simply the most exciting game we've been involved in at Market Road for quite some time. A tough match against formidable opposition, both coaches pacing the touchline having lost all sense of calm(!), parents hollering support like hardened ultras! This was as intense as Tottenham-Arsenal, Roma-Lazio, Man Utd-Liverpool and the football at times was of the very highest quality.

Despite having represented the school in cross-country earlier in the afternoon, Waiel had his best game of the season so far. Leading the team from the front, he was back to top form.
Oisin stepped into central midfield, confident and assured, setting up wave after wave of Recreativo attack. Jaye has found a dependable partner at the back in Jermaine, both boys putting in solid performances.

Despite going 1-0 down, we fought tooth and nail to get back into the game and were rewarded with a Soulaiman goal before half time.
A very determined Recreativo took to the pitch in the second half, fresh legs coming on with everyone getting involved in this thrilling encounter. Balls being cleared from the line, goalkeepers tipping over the bar, long range shots coming close. It was non-stop action and when the ref finally blew for full time, everyone taking part could breathe a sigh of relief. Two well matched sides with very passionate coaches and supporting parents, but one hell of a good game of football! A well earned three week break for all involved.

The dark winter nights are drawing in, yet Recreativo continue bouncing out of the dressing room with boundless enthusiasm and energy. A good spirit throughout the team tonight and a confident opening 15 minutes saw us take the lead, Marlais curling in a beautiful strike. Up against a very good A Class side it was crucial we kept up the tempo and stay on top. However, allowing the opposition to equalise just as the whistle was about to blow for half time somewhat deflated our early dominance. On some of the boys shoulders sloped, legs all of a sudden felt tired, frustration seemed to set in.
And despite dusting ourselves down and giving it a go in the second half, A Class stepped up a gear and began to run away with it. Once again, one or two of our boys looked extremely tired, unable to make a real impact in the second half. But from most, as always, 100% effort and never giving up until the ref put the whistle to his mouth, blew up and sent us off for Friday night fish and chips and a soul searching autopsy on how such a great group of footballers could have been on the end of a 1-5 scoreline. One of them nights. We all have them.

It's been a busy few days for the players and coaches of Recreativo. School and District games, scouting missions, league meetings and now we find ourselves on a blustery Monday night at Market Road, the autumn drawing in around us. But the club were rewarded tonight with a simply brilliant game of football. And both our U11s and U13s are, for now at least, top of our respective divisions. Tonight's opponents, Haringey Cosmos, flirt with a classy style of soccer which their New York namesakes once dazzled that great big continent across the pond with. Yet despite dominating a tough first half, the Cosmos were brought back down to earth with steely defending from Jaye and Jermaine.
Two superb goals, the first, an absolute banger (!) from Jaden 20 yards out (think Tony Yeboah for Leeds (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHCmU4QmgEM) and the other a smash and grab from Waiel, pouncing on a loose ball and slotting it away from distance, secured a very well fought win for our lads. Top marks to all the boys as we start the week with a very impressive victory.

Eleven goals, end to end, fast, furious and thoroughly entertaining. This game delivered what it promised, an exciting encounter between two good footballing sides. And Recreativo just edged it, three points in the bag and top of the league, for this weekend anyway.

Ekow bagged a hat-trick with Rory and Jackson both grabbing a goal a piece. But the best goal of the game belonged to Ritchie, who had a brilliant game. Having won the ball in midfield and brought it under control, he swivelled it onto his 'wrong' left foot and struck from a good distance - a beautifully curled strike that had the whole place jumping. Some tough tackling in midfield completed his fine performance tonight.

Marlais came close with a brilliant run late on and played his part in a superb team effort from all involved.
A special mention must go to ex- Recreativo winger Joe Bolger, now playing for Soccerscool. He got a fantastic hat-trick against us tonight and stood out as the opposition's best player, a feat even his old team mates wouldn't begrudge him. Overall, a mighty fine game played in good spirits. Despite the score, it was nice to see both teams leave the field smiling, each having played their part in a classic match. Hats off to you!

City of London Police Football Tournament 2011 1.10.11.

Four of Recreativo U13s represented Net Smashers FC in the City of London Police's Annual Football Tournament. Jaden, Kobi, Storm and Waiel were the nucleus of the team, playing sides from across London in a six-a-side format. We are pleased to say the boys were all awarded Golden Boot trophies for winning the tournament (beating Aldgate on penalties in the final) and Waiel received a special medal for being Player of the Tournament. Well done to everyone involved!

Another big simmering pan of spaghetti awaits the players as they return from school, much needed carbohydrates to boost the energy levels of these ever eager young footballers. It's good we can sit down and eat together before the game and start to focus our minds how we will go about the match.

And what a game! A right proper football match!

The boys have become young men and the games seem more relentless, tougher and faster. Once again, this match does not disappoint as both teams display some wonderful football.
Despite taking a well earned lead (Isaac), Westway level early in the second half and then get another after some hesitant play in defending our goal. The game really is a thrilling affair, end-to-end with both sides coming close. Soulaiman leads our attack, looking lively all night. Storm had a fantastic strike that rattled the bar. Waiel equalises, but almost immediately we let Westway in again 3-2 down.
Our final efforts go agonisingly close, but this is one game we ultimately lost control of. Simple man to man marking, getting tackles in early and staying on our feet were our downfall tonight. We remind the players after the match that things are going to be tougher. We need EVERY player to up his game if we are to get promotion this season, hanging around on the edges is no longer acceptable if we are to drag ourselves up into Divison A. But as always, we can't fault anyone tonight as every one put in a decent shift. Hard luck lads.

Already into our third game of the season and the team is shaping up beautifully! The dressing room is packed and we ask the boys to look around at each other and what a strong squad we have out tonight. We are blessed with a gorgeous late summer sun as we take to the field.
Despite Chapel trying to confuse us with various members in full Man Utd attire, another in an Arsenal strip and a sub who joins the action in referee-esque all black, we dominated from the start. Cal had very little to do in goal, and when called upon, dived and deflected Chapel's best chance of the game.

As always, the effort, after a long day at school, was top notch. Felipe and Ekow both found the back of the net with fine goals, Deniz and Ritchie came close late on and were only denied by Chapel's first class keeper.
All in all, not a bad start to the season. Three games in, unbeaten and thoroughly looking forward to our next match against Soocerscool. Recreativo, take a bow!

Recreativo U13s were well represented in Stoke Newington School FC's Year 8 team with Storm, Jaye, Ollie, Jaden, Kobi and Sol all getting the call up. Despite a very tough game against Urswick, our boys done really well, both Sol and Jaden grabbing a goal.
Urswick were eventual winners, 7-3 the final result, but it's early days in the Inter-School League and a great experience for our lads playing out on Hackney Marshes, the world home of grass-roots football.

St Pancras 3-3 RECREATIVO U11s 20.9.11.

Now this, my friends, was a football match! A fast paced, incident packed, end to end, six goal thriller! And there we were wondering whether we'd even be able to put a team out, what with the borough's secondary schools holding their opening evenings and enticing our kids away from the football pitches....
However, we looked around the changing room before the game and realised we had a great squad of boys tonight, all desperate to win something this year. The confidence was bouncing off the dressing room walls beforehand!
Despite going down 2-0 in the first half, the boys rallied hard, never letting their spirit slip and with a re-energised Ekow (it's amazing what a half-time banana can do!) tearing down the right wing and smashing across low hard crosses, we got right back into the game. Deniz grabbed the first and then Aaron pounced at the back post to blast home an equaliser on his league debut. Brilliant stuff!
A St Pancras own goal (again, Ekow provided the assist) put us into the lead.

But uncharacteristic defending allowed the opposition

to equalise at the death.

Still, we saw some superb performances tonight,

with Ekow, the ever improving Jem and confident

Freddie standing out.

However, it was a supreme team effort that

ensured another valuable

RECREATIVO U11s 1-2 Clissold Rangers 18.9.11.

This hastily arranged friendly between both clubs who are based in Clissold Park was an exciting affair and despite both teams using it as a training match, it was a hard fought and very competitive game. The gathered parents and supporters witnessed some great football throughout the 50 minute match, Ritchie grabbing an equaliser for Recreativo, after Clissold had taken the lead.

A late goal for Clissold from a corner and the minutes were ticking down. A last blast free-kick, the very last kick of the game, almost saved the day... without goal-line technology it was impossible to say whether it crossed the line. Others called for a penalty after witnessing a hand-ball, yet more questioned why the ref had blown the whistle twice, others just stood and shook their heads. What is for sure is that the opposition left the pitch knowing they had been very, very lucky that the decision had gone their way. But it's not all about winning as they say and despite kids crying (!), parents arguing (!!), the ref about to kill (!!!), we all left the park and headed off to sunday dinner without a drop of blood spilt!

Mid September and the sun is still blazing down for the U11s opening game of the season. As always, Friday night is busy, plenty of familiar faces, handshakes and smiles as the Recreativo entourage soak up the setting sun in this fabulous social arena. After a summer of riots and politicians hand-wringing over the future of Britain's youth, here we find a glowing example of inner-city kids involved with sport, occupied and engaged, a small army of volunteers from across the borough pointing these lads in the right direction.
The match was a great opener to the season, two determined sides battling it out for three points, neither wanting to lose their opening game. Despite Primrose hitting the bar late on, Jem's heroics in goal saved the day, the Man of the Match without doubt! A decent start to the season and plenty of football to look forward to.

Recreativo were delighted to have a special guest at the match tonight, Peter from the Farm. Twenty years ago his song 'Altogether Now' became an anthem during a time when football in this country was going through a dramatic change. It was a song that celebrated a Christmas Day truce in the First World War, when sworn enemies put down their guns and played a game of football together, a song that celebrated the brotherhood and togetherness of the common man. The boys were eager to find the song on youtube in the car on the way home. And as we headed to the chip shop we discussed football, politics and tried to make sense of that great big world out there.

Five hungry boys burst through the front door, school is done and football is once again on the agenda. The excitement is at bursting point as the lads sit glued to the Playstation before being experimented on with the coach's home-made pesto and pasta. (They like!) And so begins another season in the Camden & Islinghton Youth League....
New recruits, Jermaine, Souliaman, Sol and Isaac have been instantly welcomed by the rest of the boys, settling into training like old mates. And the new boys all come off the bench tonight and slot into the line up with smiles on their faces and determination to do well. And boy, didn't they impress! A goal each for Soulaiman and Sol, a steady performance from Jermaine and two début goals for Isaac, ensured a flying start for Recreativo. Ollie smashed a great half-volley past the hapless Rangers keeper and Waiel grabbed two beauties (one goal, a bullet free-kick with his 'wrong' foot!).
However, it wasn't just the seven goals that delighted the ever faithful parents watching from the sidelines. It was the smiles, the teamwork, the working hard for one another and the all round team performance that got Recreativo off to a flying start. Nice one lads!

We have completed the 14-man squad by signing Jermaine Mitchell and Sol Ruse. Jermaine has impressed at training and adds both height and strength to the team. Sol represented Recreativo at our Summer tournament and will give us an added energy in midfield. Welcome aboard lads!

Despite the summer holidays, it's been a busy summer for Recreativo with both comings and goings from the club. We are delighted to have signed Lawrence Dare, Issac Beck and Sol Ruse to the U13s and may still look to add a couple more as we continue our trials. Nearly everyone is registered again and we look forward to the new season.
We have began Sunday morning training again (since Aug 21st) and so are back in Clissold Park.

RECREATIVO FC Summer Trophy Presentation 24.7.11.

We held our Summer Trophy Presentation under beautiful sunshine in Clissold Park. Despite half the squad missing due to leaving early for summer holidays, we had a fantastic get together. A U11s vs U13s match was fiercely contested, the U11s playing some beautiful football early on, but ultimately coming undone by Waiel's header against them. Still a 2-1 result in favour of the U13s was a decent score and much fun was had by all.
All the boys received a very classy trophy, a small memento to look back on after putting in such a great effort this year. We now have three weeks summer break and then are back training again from SUNDAY 21st AUGUST, before the season starts in the first week of September.

Rainbow FC 7-5 RECREATIVO U11s (Friendly) 16.7.11.

Despite a downpour of biblical proportions, our friendly match against Rainbow FC went ahead on the wibbly-wobbly astro pitch at Haggerston. The rain didn't put anyone off, a full squad of 14 players turning out and putting in a superb display. New signing Aaron made his debut, tearing up the midfield. Felipe and Jackson were in full flow, attacking moves all over the pitch. Marlais was making his first return to the pitch where he broke his collar bone earlier in the season, but joined in whole heartedly, linking up moves with the rest of midfield.
Goals were flying in everywhere, the hard rain unable to dampen the boys enthusiasm. And despite the opposition winning the game with two late goals, it had been an exciting saturday match in which everyone had put in maximum effort. Well played Recreativo!

SUMMER TOURNAMENT 2.7.11.

Phew..what a scorcher! The weather could not have been better for the Edmonton Rangers Summer Football Tournament in Palmers Green, which both our Under 10s & Under 12s took part in. Despite a very early 8.15am meet, forgetting Ollie Home-Alone style(!!) and the convoy of cars losing one another on the way - a brilliant day was had by all.
Our U10s reached the quarter finals after some fine displays throughout the team and plenty of goals from Ekow Coker. Aaron made his debut, adding skilful and attacking play. And as always, Stanley captained from the back, geeing the lads up throughout the games and putting in tackles all over the place.
The U12s got off to a fine start with a 2-1 win against last year's champions Panathinikos. Waiel was back to his top form, heading in from a corner. Sol Ruse had a fine debut for the team, displaying boundless energy and enthusiasm. Maybe it was the burgers and coke that slowed the team down later in the day, only getting a 0-0 draw against Olympiakos - a team we should have beat!
Overall, despite neither team progressing to the final, everyone had a great time, with plenty of games and mixing with some of London's finest youth teams. 100% effort from everyone involved again and a great turn out from parents to watch the lads in action.
The tournament was extremely well run and we will definately be going back again next summer for more of the same! Nice one Recreativo!

Season 2011-12 Review

And so another season comes to an end, both our U10s and U12s having completed their league fixtures. And what a season it's been! Those of us involved with the club have been more than happy with the effort and performance from everyone involved. With the addition of a fantastic new goalkeeper and defender, the U12s found their stride - a little too late for a title challenge, but with one or two new boys joining us next season, the team will be in a very good shape for our next campaign.
With James Brown taking over the managerial duties of the U10s, the lads had a very tough task in a division full of very capable and long established teams. After a string of fantastic results and lots of hard work, the players can hold their heads up high, finishing 4th in the league.
Jackson and Felipe have been fantastic additions to the team, two lads with great footballing futures ahead of them. But the whole team can be proud of their achievements and again, look forward to another fantastic season next September.
Training continues EVERY SUNDAY morning throughout the summer and TUESDAY training begins in June. Finally, we witnessed a superb display by Barcelona, beating Man Utd 3-1 in the Champions League Final last night. If ever there was a lesson to be learnt by any side wishing to improve their game, then this was it. Possession, short passing, control, one or two-touch, patience, keeping the ball on the floor...a beautiful total football that we try to emulate. Barca's total control of the game, their ease at making fantastic teams looks so ordinary, is the modern benchmark that all our youngsters should be working towards. Let's continue this football philosophy at EVERY training session over the coming summer months.
We have our trophy ceremony in June, date to follow shortly.

Another action packed Friday night at Market Road as the Under 10s played their penultimate match of the season. The warm weather, as well as Cup Finals taking place on pitches 1 & 2, meant a big turnout from families and fans. Yet despite winning the game, Ekow Coker adding another two goals to his season's tally, the celebrations were somewhat soured by midfielder Deniz suffering a broken arm with ten minutes to go.
It was a sad end to a magnificent match, Deniz having played one of his better games for the team. He's a brave lad and we're hoping he will have a speedy return to the team.
A short spell on the subs bench was enough to fire up Ekow who scored both goals and once again, both Sal and Stan put in sterling performances. So with one game to go, the lads can be rightly proud of their efforts this season, flying high in the top division. We have one more game to go, a packed summer training schedule and a great tournament to look forward to as well.

Big up Tyreiss and George. The pair were world class tonight, dependable and rock solid and enabling us to spring forward and take the game to Lyndhurst. Despite just getting back from his holiday and coming straight to the match, Louis's boundless energy and tireless running terrorised the opposition. Storm added to his goal tally with a long range strike that deflected in and Ollie offered intelligent, forward play down the right of midfield.
Not the best game we've played by a long-shot, but a gritty, determined display. Lyndhurst had a player sent off five minutes from the end and our goalie was cautioned by the ref, but all in all, a gutsy, well earned win. Oh, and the new kit looked the business too! Brilliant!

Blimey! Market Road is packed tonight. We have to compete for warm-up space with a multitude of other teams, a full spectrum of kits and colour stretched out across the four pitches. Parents spill over the sidelines, kids are whizzing all over the place on bikes. It's that kind of happy chaos that we now expect every Friday at this small corner of Islington.
Recreativo put in another decent shift tonight, knowing Isledon needed to win to take the league title. In fact for the majority of the first half it looked like we would be the team to take the lead, Felipe's twists and turns and Ekow's mazy runs bringing us close on numerous occasions. However, Wolves went 1-0 up just before half time and despite some neat football from our boys, we seem to be playing catch up. Ekow smashed home a fantastic strike, but Iseldon went on to score two more and take the title.
Division A is a tough, tough league. And we can hold our heads up high in the knowledge that we've been in the top half of the table for the majority of the season. With have two more games to look forward to and a long hot summer to re-group, train hard and really give it go next time round. Well played Recreativo!

We were proud once again to see seven of our first team players representing Stoke Newington School in the recent match against Cardinal Pole FC. Storm, Waiel, Ollie, Jaden, Louis, Kobi and Jaye (as well as Sol who is currently on trial with us) put in a sterling effort. Despite suffering a 4-2 defeat, the club were overjoyed that the majority of the school team is made up with Recreativo players.

An away match in Haggerston on a beautiful sunday morning. Fantastic! It made a change heading off somewhere different to play a team we knew very little about. However, the boys set about this match like it was a Cup Final, a good parent turn out cheering from the sidelines.
Despite spending the opening 15 minutes camped in the opposition's half, Rainbow got their first shot on goal and bundled the ball across the line. Recreativo certainly didn't let their heads drop and set about the remainder of the match with dynamic and forceful play. Felipe is a maestro in midfield, Jackson a born striker. Sal and Marlais as tough as anyone and always ready to drive forward. Rory once again played superbly as all the boys pushed forward with every opportunity. A wonder goal from Stanley put us level and if only we would have put away all the chances that came our way we would have won this game much more easily.
Felipe was rewarded for all his hard work with a well taken strike that smashed into the back of Rainbow's net and put us 2-1 up. The only negative today was an injury to Marlais who fell and injured his shoulder. (An ambulance arrived and we await for news on his injury. Get well soon Mar!).
A fantastic game of football, a solid performance from all our players and we look forward to inviting Rainbow to ours for a return fixture soon. Nice one Recreativo!

A hat-trick for Storm, a superb series of one-on-one saves from Milvydas and a first goal of the season for both Ollie and Kobi were the highlights of this encounter. With the long awaited sunshine finally making an appearance at Market Road (after a long season of cold wintry nights!), the terraces and grass bank was full. A busy Friday night of football, with both our teams playing, is always an excellent way to start the weekend. And despite the eventual scoreline, our boys did not disappoint.

In a hard fought game, Recreativo proved to be equal to Crown & Manor all over the pitch. Maybe one or two of Crown's midfield giants tipped the eventual balance in their favour, but we left the pitch with our heads held high. Another goal for Jackson and another all round team effort.
At the end of the game we told the boys we were unconcerned with the scoreline after witnessing a match where every player really did put in 100%. We're still up there!

A lacklustre performance from our Under 12s tonight and let's face it, we all have our off nights once in a while. After going 3-0 down in the first half it was always going to be an uphill struggle. But at half time we re-grouped and gave it a real go in the second half, coming close, knowing we had little more to lose. A tough encounter against a side who are very much on the up. We will do better, get things on the right track again and spend the oncoming summer working hard to do much better next season.
Back home the Champions League flickered from the telly. Barcelona vs Arsenal. Messi, Xavi, Iniesta and co showed how football should be played. Technically supreme, beautifully played out, frighteningly dominant, Barca gave us millions watching around the world a lesson in how to win a football match. We begin this coming weekend trying to put into practice this possession-at-all-costs philosophy on the Recreativo training pitch. We are determined to improve. See you all at training.

A Class 3-3 RECREATIVO U10s 8.3.11.

An epic match and the boys played brilliantly. In a tight first half Jackson made the difference. He slotted home after Stanley, then Marlais and then Eko had passed the ball from defence to attack just like we practised in training.   Man of The Match for the first half was undoubtedly Cal. He pulled off three great saves and pushed a couple more to safety round the post and also sprinted out of his goal to boot the ball away when their striker was through. One of Cal's saves saw him dive across the floor, stop the ball which flew up the face of the open goal and over the cross bar.  It was a great all round team performance.

Across the midfield Eko, Marlais, Richie and Felipe really battled hard and the same goes for the defenders Sal and Stanley - who was captain for the match and could be heard bossing the game from our defence. Lots of running from Matteo too. In the second half Jackson came alive with some great skills, beating their defender time and time again, putting in cross after cross and having a cracking long shot which Eko ran in the rebound for us to go 2 up. Harry almost got on the end of another Jackson cross with his head but it just eluded him. Felipe was running the show in the middle having switched positions with Eko. There was some really good passing from the midfield and strikers.

After further pressure Jackson got another and we looked strong enough to win but A-Class aren't called 'Class' for nothing. Despite bringing Jem and Freddie on to give us some strength they kept running at us.  They took advantage of us as we shuffled the team round and people became accustomed to new positions.  Their strikers are lethal and unfortunately they broke away on the counter attack three times and equalised in the last minute. Nothing Cal could do about it. For 35 minutes of the match we had soaked up their pressure which was commendable. It was an excellent game and the best the boys have played under me this year. Their coach said to me afterwards it was the best any team had played against them.

RECREATIVO U12s 5-1 Belsize Youth 28.2.11.

We spread eight satsumas across the dinner table, each one representing a Recreativo Under 12. Scoffing down a bowl of pasta we discuss formation, team line up and tactics and decide we'll go with a more attacking shape. Fourth in the second division we have nothing to lose and plan an all out assault on Belsize Youth.
The change in tonight's personnel, the new responsibilities, the balance and shape seems to excite the boys - everyone chipping in their ideas. Despite the messing about in the dressing rooms, Recreativo took to the pitch in very high spirits, an extra man in midfield giving us a pro-active approach. When the boys play like they did tonight, it's a joy to watch. Breakneck speed, controlled passes, the ball flowing from one wing to another and goals galore. George and Tyreiss were the unsung heroes tonight, both displaying strength and discipline at the back. Nothing could get past them. Ollie played confident one-two's with Waiel. Louis terrorised the Belsize defenders with Storm backing him up. Jaden stepped up and charged up and down the left flank and Kobi came off the bench to add to the flowing football. Brilliant!
Two goals for Louis, two for Waiel and one for Storm ensured victory. But it wasn't the result that really mattered tonight - it was the attitude, the beautiful play, the movement and passing that each and every player displayed. Recreativo's best performance of the season. Superb!

Despite it being half term, with one or two players away, we put out a decent looking side. Still in 4th place in the top division, this match gave us an ideal opportunity to push on up for the the final run in of the season. And after a hard fought game, both teams came away with a point. 0-0, a proper football score!

With Ekow back in the side, we had a little more strength, but unfortunately we could not put the ball away! Ekow came close in the first half, hitting the bar with a long-range shot, only for Deniz to head wide from the re-bound.
Both Rory and Jem put in good performances, coming off the bench and working hard for the point. And as always, Sal, Marlais and Stan kept us solid at the back. So a point a piece, a clean sheet and a couple of weeks before our next encounter. Nice one lads!

Regents Park 1-1 RECREATIVO U12s Challenge Cup (Regents win 4-2 on penalties) 11.2.11.

Penalties. Dreaded penalties. The hope, the excitement, the anguish, the dread and ultimately the sorrow, can sweep down like dark clouds and almost take your breath away. This was a game we should have won but for early missed opportunities which allowed Regents back in to the game. After George's early strike it looked like we would go on to add a few more, but Regents crafty striker began to make inroads into our defence. His neat footwork and close control seemed to ruffle our feathers and for the only time in the game, Milvydas was caught off guard. 1-1.
Both teams rallied hard in the second half, but full time was up and penalties would have to settle this one. Full marks to our five volunteers who elected themselves to have a go. No matter how many times we practice putting penalties in the corner of the goal, sometimes the nerves, the floodlights, the pressure, can take over and make a player just smack the ball down the middle. And so it was a little painful to go out against an A division side that we feel were no better than us. Bet keep your heads held high lads, there's no shame in that.

A comprehensive win for our lads tonight with a bagful of goals and some scintillating football played out across pitch four. A slight tweak in our usual line up found a good balance, with some of our more quiet players now beginning to shine. Sal added strength and speed at the back, last ditch blocks and tackles saving us early on. Despite a Westway goal in the first half, Marlais's equaliser (his first goal for the club) lifted the boys, who came out in the second half to dominate the game.

Felipe is our very own Kaka, a midfield maestro who can take possession, turn and twist and make a killer pass. His good work was rewarded with a goal of his own in front of the grass bank end. Jem put in a really good performance, confidence growing with every game and had a decent effort crash against the bar. Another fine strike by Marlais, a well taken goal by Rory (who had a fantastic game) and then a Westway own goal gave the boys a very well deserved win. An accomplished team performance tonight. The lads should be very proud.

A very tough game for our lads tonight as our hopes of a glorious Cup run came crashing down to our heaviest loss so far. Everyone was hoping to avoid Crown & Manor at this stage of the competition, but we took to the field determined, every player looking forward to the match and ready to get stuck in. Despite our best efforts, we spent large parts of the game camped in our own half. Crown's main threat came from a strong front man (he really was more a young man than a boy!) - his physical presence dominating their attacks. We had problems clearing the ball and 3-0 down at half time it was always going to be hard.

However, we did show flashes of what-could-be at times. The best goal of the game was scored by our Deniz, who latched on to Marlais's lobbed pass, one bounce and smashed the ball into the net. It didn't matter we were already 8 down, it was a brilliant goal and worthy of the wild celebrations! New lad Felipe looks an instant great signing, super passing between him and Jackson gave us hope that things will definately get better. And surely they will. Despite the defeat, we never gave up and look forward to the next game, even more determined to give a better account of ourselves.

The huddle of parents at the end of the game felt like the family of a loved one bidding farewell at a funeral. Awkward silence. Shuffling feet. Nods of the head and heartfelt condolences. Recreativo's recent resurgence was tonight painfully extinguished - our soaring spirit shot down in the darkening night. It felt like a very lonely corner by the side of the pitch as a few of us remained and tried to fathom the reason for what went so drastically wrong...We lightened up as the car got further and further away from this dark place and towards home, chocolate, TV and chips.

This was not to be a repeat of the easy fixture against St Pancras last season. With a much improved opposition coming at us, wave after wave of attack, their slick passing moves hard to break down - at least in the first half. However with Ritchie deputising in goal (and pulling off some fine saves) and a tough defence standing firm, Recreativo managed to claw our way back into this game. As always, Jackson looked lively, always looking for the ball and with a great first touch. We are trying to instill into Ekow that a bowl of Cheerios does does constitute a pre-match meal and after a series of forward runs he once again looked very worn out.

However, despite being second best for large periods of this game, the lads clung on and were unlucky not to have grabbed a late goal with Deniz and then Ritchie (playing the second half outfield) coming close. A very worthy point in this very tough division. Well done boys!

Another solid performance and a proper football result! Recreativo are back to business and the campaign for promotion is well and truly back on. Last match we were up against an almost genteel outfit from the leafy surrounds of Highgate. Tonight, more tougher opposition from Somers Town, Kings Cross. Both teams eager to win, but our lads just edging it through another real team effort.
Once again, practice on the training pitch paid off. Our free-kick drills from sunday mornings in Clissold Park were perfectly executed here by Louis Dillon. He curled the ball from twenty yards and put us ahead. Milvydas put in a brilliant shift between the sticks, but once again it was effort from each and every player that won us the game. Recreativo, big up yer chests!

The Spanish call it tiki-taka. Short passing moves, sharp one or two touch passing, but above all, a style of play that emphasises keeping possession of the ball. If ever there was a match that clearly demonstrated this radical approach to winning a game, then this was it! Confident from the start and afforded time on the ball from a lacklustre opposition, Recreativo imitated a cool Barcelona at times. There's no better thrill for a manager to see months of work at training pay off on the pitch when finally everything clicks and you want to holler 'Ole!' with every pass!
So many games are won (and lost) at Market Road through route-one physicality. Big players, with strength, with power, crashing into one another. It made a change to witness a game won by our own lads playing a style that saw every player work for each other. The ball hardly left the ground as Recreativo pinned back the opposition with a series of flowing, rapid movement.
A hat-trick for Tyreiss, two a piece for Louis and Waiel, a left footer for Storm and an own goal gave Recreativo our highest ever goal tally. However, it wasn't just about goals tonight. This display really did put the emphasis on teamwork, a steady and controlled approached to winning a game of football. Recreativo, muy buena noche de futbol!

Christmas over, back to school and back to business for the lads at Recreativo Football Club. Unfortunately the heavens opened as we arrived at Market Road, driving rain giving everyone a soaking. Still, the boys were well up for it, youthful energy bouncing off the walls of the dressing room and then out onto the pitch.

Iseldon Wolves are flying high at the top of the division so we knew we were in for a tough game.
Despite soaking up the early pressure we were beat by a whipped in cross that deflected in our own goal. Iseldon's physical edge gave them a slight advantage, despite some of our lads crashing into tackles. At 3-0 down our lads didn't give up. Sal was still battling for every ball right until the end, playing with a smile on his face too! And Ritchie was rewarded for all his efforts with a well taken late strike. No big team talk, no technical advice (to go in one ear and out of the other!) in the changing room, but just two instructions for each player. "That's all we want you to remember when you get out on that pitch". And for the most part each player took their instructions on board. After three defeats in our last three games it was important tonight that we came out of this game with something. And with Belsize looking a few inches taller than most of our lads we wondered if it was going to be a tall order!
In the end, we were unlucky not to have won this game. We dominated large spells of the match. Storm's sublime overhead kick went inches wide in the first half. Jaye once again was dependable at the back, shutting down and clearing anything that came his way. Francois's tireless running at left back was another highlight. The whole team put in an extremely solid effort, looked well balanced and worked hard for each other. The only negative from the game was our lack of shots, a laboured effort in front of goal where we were trying to pass it into the goal instead of smashing it!
However, we played some very neat football and with a similar performance are hoping for three precious points in our upcoming fixture against Highgate Rangers.

RECREATIVO U10s 1-1 A Class 19.11.10

Another tough encounter against one of the league's best sides. Another first class performance from Recreativo. Another result that sees us stay in the top half of the premier division in one of the strongest youth leagues in London. Despite going a goal down our lads were more than determined to get something from this game. With parents, subs and all manner of waifs and strays edging along the touchline of pitch three, Recreativo played a huge part in an entertaining and thrilling encounter. Once again, Jackson's sheer determination and deft touch when receiving the ball, paid dividends, slotting the ball past A Class's keeper and rescuing a point.
Having played two of the best teams in the league and come away with our heads held high, all thoughts now turn towards taking on the league leaders next, Isledon Wolves. If we show the same determination as we did here tonight, then we have absolutely nothing to fear. Let's go for it!

We always try to take something positive away from every game, but tonight it was hard. A lacklustre Recreativo let a pretty average opposition control the game, pulling us here there and everywhere and saw us leave the pitch more than a little dejected. However, Tyreiss got on the score sheet, a small reward for the hard work he's put in since joining the club. The final ten minutes saw a Recreativo bursting with vitality, increasing the pressure around Lyndhurst's goal. Yet what often is the case sees us far too goal shy, unable to shoot, to have a go, rooted to the spot while we dilly dally around. Some of the boys are struggling with reading the game at times, opposition players slipping through unopposed, unmarked and given an easy route to the back of our net. It's a frustrating exercise calling for players to mark up, only for them to wander off into no man's land a few seconds later.

Having said all that, we lost to one goal, a late Recreativo rally a little late to take something away from this game. We can only look forward now and to our next fixture. Friday Nov 19th will be a very big night for our club, both our U10s and U12s playing at Market Road. An ideal opportunity to get back to winning ways and put this club back on the right track. Let's be 'avin ya!

Blimey! If ever there was a match that summed up the old football cliche, 'A game of two halves', then this was it. From being ripped wide open in the first half, Recreativo came out in the second half like Tottenham did against Inter at the San Siro...phew, what a turn around!

We always know a match against Crown & Manor is going to be a tough one, but in the first half our defence stood like rabbits caught in the headlights, forgetting to mark and letting their strikers waltz through the team, like Anne Widdercombe on Strictly Come Dancing!
We realised our mistake, putting our player of the season last year, Sal, in goal, so when we got him out to stabilise our defence we had a solid backline to build upon.

3-0 down at half time, Deniz and Ekow came out in the second half and began to make tackles, win the ball and launch Joe and Jackson to go forward. Harry came on from the bench and got stuck in when he could and overall the team had better shape. We were never going to come back and win this one. However, Crown & Manor were pleading the ref to blow up at the end as Recreativo dominated the second half and were very unlucky in the end to come away with no points. Two great goals from Jackson and Ekow were the highlight of the second half. A great fightback! Hard luck lads.

What better way to cure the hangover from our loss at Market Road on Friday night, than to jump on a plane early next morning and land in Madrid a couple of hours later. Storm and coach Jimmie decided to check out all the football that Madrid has to offer. The city is more football obsessed than almost any other city on the planet!
We were lucky enough to have arranged a trip when our namesake, Recreativo (de Huelva) were in town, playing against Rayo Vallecano (who happen to be Jimmie's favourite Spanish team!). So we made way to Vallecas in the southern part of the city and headed for Rayo's stadium, the Teresa Rivero, a 15,000 capacity ground. Despite it's fairly small size the atmosphere was electric! With Rayo Vallecano sitting high in the Segunda Liga (2nd Div) and Recreativo propping up the bottom, it was a tightly fought game, but sadly ended in a 0-0.
Rayo's fans, the Bukaneros, kept up a constant noisy support through out (an atmosphere that the Emirates could well do with!). It felt like a game from the old days, one you could just turn up to and pay on the gate, which made a change!
And then it was off to see how the other half live! Real Madrid's stadium rises high above the skyline on Avenida Concha Espina in the northern end of town. Like them or loathe them, you can not help but be impressed by the huge concrete cathedral to football that is the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, home to the world's most decorated club. We were here to see Real Madrid vs Racing Santander and were lucky to see goals! goals! goals! (Ronaldo was on form scoring 4, Higuian and Ozil grabbed a goal a piece ensuring a 6-1 victory for Real). Again, the atmosphere was second to none, every one of it's 80,000+ seats filled with fans who demand not only a win, but the very best flowing and spectacular football.
We managed a tour of the ground the following day, a must do if you ever get the chance to go to Madrid. Jimmie closed his eyes for a second when sitting in Jose Mourinho's seat and for just a few seconds imagined what could have been....

RECREATIVO U12s 1-2 Islington Admiral Youth 22.10.10.

While the soap opera starring Wayne Rooney, Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea and/or Real Madrid grabbed every headline, we had more important things to concentrate on. Pitch Four and an encounter with Islington Admiral Youth. Another strange one really, another very under par performance by our lads. We looked knackered to be honest, too many late nights for some of our boys (our spies tell us that one of our lads was still out on the street at 10pm the previous night!). Tyreiss has fitted in well in the team, but even he tonight motioned to come off, completely warn out, but having put in a decent spell in midfield. Louis got us our goal after Admiral had taken the lead, but our joy was short lived as they added another a couple of minutes after.
Win some, lose some. That's it really. A game that we will happily forget. The only real positive is that we know we really have to come out fighting against Lyndhurst if we want to climb back up to the top division.

Primrose Hill 2-0 RECREATIVO U10s 19.10.10.

A strange one this. One of them games with no real pattern and a very under par performance from Recreativo. Played out under storm clouds, this match never really got going, well not for us. Sal deputised for an absent Freddie in defence and done a sterling job as last man, last ditch tackles flying in to keep us somewhat still in the game. Jackson showed promise whenever he received the ball, but his chances came far and few between. Any ball that did find it's way into the Primrose box was dealt with by their keeper, who to be honest looked very competent and confident. One or two of our players can let the occasion get to them sometimes, finding themselves way out of position, wandering, failing to close down the opposition.
However, the lads didn't stop running all night and must be applauded for getting out onto the pitch under such a cold and wet night and giving it their all. Better luck next time Recreativo!

RECREATIVO U10s 2-1 Angel Islington 15.10.10.

With our best player, or should I say, one of our best players, on lock-down, banned from playing football by his mum, we were a little anxious about how this game would pan out. (Now lets be honest, Ekow is a big strong boy and can sometimes seem to take on the opposition on his own at times). However, our fears soon lifted as first Deniz stepped up to take the battling midfielder role and then Jackson set the game on fire, making his debut and smashing home two brilliant strikes. A late summer signing who will prove to be an integral part of the new look Recreativo.

We turned Ekow's exclusion to our advantage, the boys realizing a less direct approach was needed, everyone passing and having to work a little harder for one another. And that's exactly what they did. Joe was instrumental in most of the attacking play. He made a surging run down the right flank, the coaches screaming for him to make the pass which he threaded through for Jackson to put away his second goal. Superb football!

All in all, a really good team performance and a pat on the back to new manager James who set the team out and found the right balance on the night. We are all looking forward to the next game. Bring it on!

Blimey! The boys are so loud and raucous in the car, we have to warn them: pipe down or we're turning the car around and heading home! The banter flows between them, the usual stuff of emerging young teens..girls, rap stars, trouble with teachers, detentions and who's football team is the best. At times the volume is so loud, the excitement explodes from the car like the sound of a low rider boy racer, bass booming down your street at three in the morning. It's a relief to park up, get a ball out and get ready for the game.
The lads are well up for this monday night game tonight, a strong squad assembled to give Futebol de Salao a real fight. We had played them in a friendly a few weeks ago and they were a decent passing team, so tonight we were taking no chances. And a really good game we gave them, Recreativo finding the form that had been lacking in recent games. Louis and Waiel formed a formidable pair. Storm, Francois and Jaye worked hard for each other in defence and both George and Tyreiss were a solid pairing in the middle.
With Milvydas such a dependable goalkeeper, the boys really did play as a team tonight. Waiel grabbed two well taken goals and despite a late goal and Man Utd-esque rally from FDS, Recreativo were well deserved winners. Three points, high fives and smiles. And luckily with all that energy put into the game, it was a nice quiet drive home. Result!

Crown & Manor 4-1 RECREATIVO U10s (friendly) 1.10.10

We played this fixture as a friendly match after our referee failed to show. It's never happened to us before, so both managers agreed to play with a stand in ref and to get the game going. A good opportunity for James the new U10s manager to experiment with the line up and not fret too much over the result. The rain had been lashing down as players and parents got a soaking. The floodlights cut through the grey heavens illuminating the pitch that despite the downpour, had drained well enough for the match to go ahead.

Ekow had a late call up to the team, however was much needed tonight as Crown & Manor proved to be a very strong outfit. We were able to more than match them in the first half, Ekow's long surging runs culminated in a fantastic solo goal which cancelled out the opposition's early lead.

However, the second half seemed an uphill battle at times. One or two players looked a little bit lost and found it hard to leave an imprint on the game as Crown & Manor began to control the ball with more possession and better technique. Joe seemed to be taking on their entire team at times, (reminiscent of George Best!) and was unlucky not to find the back of the net.

Despite the scoreline it was great to be back at Market Road for a new season. There were glimpses of a decent team shaping up there tonight and we fully expect to be up there battling with the best of them. Well played lads!

RECREATIVO U12s 1-3 Somers Town 17.9.10

Ouch! At two-nil down on ten minutes, we were always going to be chasing this game. Somers Town slipped with ease through our back line early on and then were gifted a penalty when Jaye uncharacteristically handled the ball. The two goal set back unsettled us, as we desperately fought back to get a foot hold in this game. Despite being behind we spent long periods of the match in the Somers Town half, Waiel's shot hitting the bar and both Tyreiss and Louis's efforts going inches wide.
However, the difference was simply that Somers Town were more clinical in front of goal. Recreativo were flicking the ball up, over passing around the penalty area in a too Arsenal-esque manner, over-playing instead of getting more shots on target. Louis took his penalty superbly, but it was a little too late to get something out of this game. Jaye made up for his earlier mistakes by putting in a more assured performance in the second half and was joined by Oisin who looked more confident and solid making his league debut. We were not overawed, but definitely a little under par tonight. Win some lose some. Hard luck lads, let's work hard towards the next game.

RECREATIVO U12s 2-2 Futebol de Salao 3.9.10 (Friendly)

A couple of hours before the match and the lads are wolfing down plates of spaghetti, smart school shoes and bags littering the hallway after their second day at 'big school'. Everyone seems to have grown a few inches over the summer holidays and return for Recreativo duty sporting tidy new hair cuts, mobile phones and a new found self assured attitude. I don't know how we managed it, but in the six weeks of holiday that saw our lads jet off to all corners of the globe, we were still able to seek out new players, liaise with their families, attend registration and rush them into the team ready for this first match. Phew! A very busy summer for Recreativo FC.

As always, spirits were high on the drive to Market Road, Kiss FM blaring out as the car load sung along, winding our way through Friday night rush hour. Not long after, it was out onto the pitch to face Futebol de Salao, the local Brazilian Soccer School team. And despite being a friendly, both teams were playing like it was a cup final! A game of fast end to end football unraveled in front of an excited terrace now filling up with parents and fans. As always, Louis and Waiel formed a great partnership, busily working their way through the FDS defence. Both Tyreiss and George looked solid in midfield, as did Storm who made a series of great tackles. We came back from 1-0 down after two fantastic goals from Louis and despite a superb debut from Milvydas in goal, FDS poached a last gasp equaliser that saw the ref blow the final whistle, both teams shake hands and a very exciting game of football come to an end. A good start to the new season. Nice one Recreativo!

RECREATIVO FC End of Season Trophy Presentation 20.6.10

After a hard season for all our teams, it was great to all come together for our trophy presentation. We were joined by our senior side too for a U11s vs Senior team match - the Juniors winning 3-2 with goals from Jaye, Storm and Francois. The U9s took on the parents, again a good 2-1 win for the Juniors leaving the parents worn out, embarrassed and truly beaten!
For all our teams, it was a good way to come together and celebrate and end of our season. We had two Parents Player of the Season too, U9s award going to Sal, U11s award going to George (and Seniors Player of the Season award going to Jimmy Lloyd).

Well done everybody!

RECREATIVO U9s 3-0 Primrose Hill 11.6.10

It's World Cup day! Yipeeeee!! 64 live games, 30 days of the beautiful game, as a fiesta of fabulous football keeps the world enthralled and on the edge of their seats. While politicians argue and world leaders threaten each other with war, the people all over the planet party together and embrace the common language that we all understand; football. For the next month at least, life is a joyful carnival.

What a day to finish our season, our final game squeezed in between South Africa vs Mexico and Uruguay vs France. And our lads certainly went out with a bang! A fabulous header from Sal (from Ekow's lofted free kick), an overhead curler from Deniz and a mazey run and strike from Ritchie were the highlights of this game.
Freddie was man of the match, his block challenges and sliding tackles slamming shut the Recreativo back door firmly and leaving Primrose nowhere to go but back into their own half. But as always, every player gave their all tonight, a great team effort that brought us a 3-0 win and brought a great finale to our long season. So that's it, the U9s have completed all their fixtures for now and can now sit back and enjoy the summer, before it all starts up again next September. A massive WELL DONE RECREATIVO! Now...where's my vuvuzela...?

RECREATIVO U9s 2-3 A Class 4.6.10

We've said it before, that Market Road can be such an unforgiving place. The mass of onlookers cheering (and jeering) every touch, every pass, every tackle. The coaches patrolling the touchline barking and bawling and the parents having mini heart attacks when one of their nearest and dearest makes a mistake. Tonight saw a huge contrast between the delight of Joe running the entire length of the pitch in joyous celebration of his goal (think Marco Tardelli World Cup final 1982) and Jem's near to tears desperation late on as an A Class striker pounced on his lost ball and won the game in the dying minutes. Despite their late winner, Recreativo had simply been the best team on the night.
As A Class celebrated winning the league, we were left wondering what more we have left to do to come away with those precious three points. Ritchie, Jem and Stanley had formed an impenetrable defence in the first half. Ekow and Deniz worked brilliantly together pushing their way through the opposition, neat footwork and taking plenty of shots on goal. Joe had patrolled the left side of midfield with his usual eagerness for the ball and boundless energy. On reflection, after our heart rate had returned to it's normal beats per minute, after the crowds had disappeared and after the kit bag had been slung into the cupboard until next time, came the realisation that we had just played one of the finest performances of the season. Our U9s took their first tentative steps in this league nine months ago and have grown as a team who can now look forward to really giving it a go next season.
We hope more than anything, that most of all it's been a lot of fun. We hope that despite the odd scrape and bruise, the occasional tears, that this season has brought smiles and laughter, friendship and togetherness and long may it continue to all the players of Recreativo Football Club.

RECREATIVO U9s 2-1 FC Unity 28.5.10

A win for Recreativo, the start of a long Bank Holiday weekend and the World Cup now only two weeks away. All we need is for the evil Ben Mitchell to be arrested for attempted murder in Eastenders and it will be the perfect Friday!

We had a little bit of luck tonight, FC Unity's two best players turning up ten minutes into the game. Playing against six players for those opening minutes put Recreativo into a 2-0 lead, Stan and Joe bagging the goals. It was great to see Stanley get his first goal for our club after his recent displays. We always hold him up as a fine example that size doesn't matter. A good touch, a football brain and more determination and drive than most will hold Stanley in good stead for a future in football.
However, it was an all round team performance tonight. Despite Unity's late surge and consolation goal, Ritchie and Harry made crucial blocks and tackles and long clearances for Kily and Ekow to chase which saw us run down the last few minutes. Three crucial points were ours tonight - brilliant! Well done lads.

On the journey home all thoughts turned to the impending World Cup. Flags are now flying from the windows and cars, the excitement cranking up as every day passes. It's going to be fantastic, a long hot summer of football, football, football! For Ekow's sake, let's hope for an England-Ghana final!(With England winning eh?!).

Maybe it was fatigue after the high's of the weekend. Maybe the end of a very hard season. Whatever it was, we were second best tonight against a fairly decent side. With Ekow's equaliser we thought we had a chance. We hit the bar, we had a ball cleared off their goal line, we had shots that just went wide. But this evening it felt like we simply lacked the strength that so many of the other sides seem to have, the long legs that carry a player across them wide open pitches. Still, top marks to every Recreativo player who played tonight, as usual another 100% effort.

Junior World Cup Tournament 22-23.5.10

The beautiful surroundings of Primrose Hill formed a perfect back drop to the annual Junior World Cup event ran by the Hill Soccerschool. The hottest weekend of the year was not the perfect weather for countless group games, but after grumbling about the long hard winter for so long, it made a change to be playing on grass under the gorgeous ball of sun, high in the perfect blue heavens. The Under 11s played in saturday's tournament, pulling England out of the hat. Uneven, bumpy ground, grass long enough for some of our shorter players to get lost in (!), it was perfect for a proper park tournament and made a change from the massive pitches of Market Road.
After playing a marathon 10 group matches, Recreativo sailed into the final, the only team not to have lost a match. Goals galore had been the order of the day on the run up to the final. Storm buried a beautiful volley, Zidane-like that fell out ouf the sky. Louis found the back of the net with rocket like accuracy and Jaden scored the perfect team goal after a classic counter attack move. The only sour note came when we had to step in to defend an opposition's goalkeeper when their bullying 'manager' berated them having lost to us. Shame on him!
Facing Germany in the final, we already knew the script! After a hard fought game and still no score, it came down to the dreaded penalties to settle it. And of course, the Germans did what Germans do best and knocked England out. (Fair play to Junior and his Highagate Rangers team who took home the Cup). It was a lovely sight leaving the park on saturday, every player had a medal and recounted the 'what ifs' and what could of been, all extremely worn out, but happy and having had a laugh. Sun beating down, the nature of this beautiful park alive and buzzing.
On sunday it was the turn of our U9s, this time representing Brazil. A quick team talk after we had lost our opening game 2-1 had the boys beginning to believe that not all was lost. Tournament football usually allows you one bad result, but enough games to make amend. And we got straight back into it, winning our next group games, goals a plenty from Joe, Ritchie and Sal. The semi final was a tense affair, the coaches and parents voices getting louder as we got nearer to the final. The match was settled on penalties, Sal putting in a superb performance between the goalposts.
Facing England (Angel Islington) in the final, we knew it was going to be a tough game. However we hadn't come all this way to go out now and once again Sal got two superb goals to make it 2-0. A nervous last two minutes passed with parents and kids along the touchline ready to charge on and congratulate the boys. It's been such a long season, everyone had played their hearts out so it was a very well deserved reward when the ref put the whistle to his lips and blew full time and Recreativo were crowned champions of the world!
We were all winners today, everyone associated with our club. The players who weren't with us, the parents who leave work early to get their kids to our matches, the families who come and watch us play every week, the kids who come training but aren't in the team, everyone. There's a big tough world out there and maybe it gets a little tougher the older you get, but today for all of us, it was so nice to see our lads with smiles beaming from ear to ear, to hear their laughter and enjoy a wonderful weekend in one of London's most beautiful parks. Big up yer chests Recreativo Football Club, CHAMPIONS OF THE WORLD!

Westway 3-2 RECREATIVO U11s 21.5.10

The last game of the season and Market Road is absolutely buzzing. Cup final evening sees every league law broken as hundreds of people stand so close to the pitch, players are nearly crashing into them as they come flying down the wings. The usual behind the barrier rule, no photography, no videoing, no parents shouting and screaming rules are ripped up as we watch a pulsating U11s final before our game. Despite the chaos, despite the noise, it seems a happy disorganisation tonight. By the time we take to the pitch we already know we are probably doomed in this top division, but fight hard to drag Westway down with us! 2-0 down within five minutes, we rally hard and clawed our way back to a 2-2 draw. A late Westway winner saw them celebrate like they had won the World Cup and a despondant Recreativo leave the pitch at full time with a shrug of the shoulders.
It's been a very long and very hard season in the top flight and already we are bigging up the push for promotion next time round. We have toughed it out as far as we could go, look forward to the summer break and will come back a little stronger next year and ready to start to fight the good fight. We will be back!

Hampstead 0-1 RECREATIVO U9s 17.5.10

Despite having it all still to play for there was something of a relaxed end of season feel to this evening's game. Maybe it was the sunshine, a beautiful warm evening in N7. However, the team were raring to go as usual and were camped in Hampstead's half for the majority of the first half.
Our fears of leaving Ekow, Recreativo's powerhouse, out tonight soon evaporated as everyone got involved with some fine football, pushing forward at every opportunity. Fabio Capello should be looking at taking Stan to the World up, important cover at right back. He sprung from the sub's bench to put in a solid show. Joe didn't stop running, causing panic in the Hampstead defence every time he had the ball at his feet. Ritchie was rewarded with his second goal in two games after stepping up the pace in the second half and smashing the ball home. The difference between coming away with nothing or taking the three points is made out of painted white steel and five inches thick. The cross bar saved Crown & Manor on two separate occasions late on as Ekow and Sal's superb strikes rattled the goalposts and dashed our final push at getting something from this game. But blimey, what a performance! Marlais played his finest game since he joined us, deft touches taking him round Crown's defenders. And when he couldn't go round, he went through them! Sal captained the side, leading from the back and along with Ritchie added a bit of steel to defence. Stan got involved, hands up, calling for the ball and taking on players. Ritchie's late goal was small consolation for a brilliant team performance.
We have said it so many times that it's the effort that matters most. If we got points for this alone, we'd be miles ahead in this league!

While the politicians are arguing over who should sit in No 10, the Recreativo red flag was flying high over Market Road tonight. An astro turf pitch in every neighbourhood! A community league in every street! Millions to be poured into local youth services! Vote football for everybody! Vote fantastic Friday nights out! Vote Recreativo...you know it makes sense.

After some really good performances over the past few weeks, Recreativo deserved to be winners here tonight. Westway had proved tough opponents in the past couple of encounters, but with our frontline pressing high into their goalmouth and our defence as solid as a brick wall, one goal was enough to see out this match.

We found a good balance tonight, Deniz switched to an attacking role, in front of Ekow's surging charges. It paid off when he tucked away a loose ball in the first half. Again, a solid defensive display from Freddie and then Sal, with Rory and Cal getting their tackles in when they could. Jem had a hard task keeping Westway's nippy right winger away from goal, but did a fine job in seeing out the second half and ensuring all three points came back to Stoke Newington.
It was real relief at the final whistle after a difficult month for Recreativo. Good to see some happy faces and some laughs on the drive back home. Well done boys!

"I've got a feeling...that tonight's gonna be a good night...that tonight's gonna be a good good night!"...sing the Black Eyes Peas as we head towards the match, sun streaming into the car, windows down, music blasting. Spirits are soaring as summer seems to have burst across London, it's friday, the start of the weekend and Recreativo have a semi final to win. As always the dressing room is a raucous riot of noise, until the final instructions are given out and the lads race out onto the pitch. Despite the upbeat mood throughout the team, Crown & Manor were soon in front and we were chasing after the ball. Players were moving out of position, leaving ourselves exposed to C&M's next wave of attack. In truth, the game took a familiar pattern - lots of effort, but we didn't pass the ball around, didn't use the width of the pitch and looked to Ekow to get us back into the game.
Market Road can be an unforgiving place. A real school of hard knocks. 5-0 down, players tired and injured, opposition parents hollering, coaches bawling...but it was heart warming to see Kily poach a goal with minutes to go, one touch and whack into the net, before turning and celebrating with his team mates. We went crashing out of the cup, but didn't give up and kept fighting until the end. We'll soon get over this and work hard to get them good times back. Heads up everyone. We ain't done yet.

The dressing room was filled with laughter and noise as usual before kick off. Everyone was all smiles, messing about as pre-match banter overflowed under the door and out into the corridor that leads to the pitches. The sun was shining signalling the coming of summer and the ending of another season. Whatever happened tonight, win, lose or draw, lets just get out there and enjoy these last few games....however, it was hard not to show disappointment at the final whistle, knowing that we were certain of relegation back to Division B after a game that we all too easily threw away. To use a well worn football cliche, it really was a game of two halves as our second half display looked tired and one or two players seemed away with the fairies!
Despite it all being about enjoyment, it was hard to hide the dissatisfaction of another defeat, to a side that we beat earlier in the season. But hey, it's been a long season, with many great games and performances. We didn't show it tonight, but look back on many other matches when we have played such fantastic football. A summer break, a World Cup to look forward to, some serious pre-season training and some sessions playing football for football's sake (and not worrying about league standings and winning games) will do us all some good. Hard luck Recreativo.

Having hosted a mini tournament during the day, the pitch is still overflowing with excited teenagers booting balls all over the place. One of them lies injured in our goal area with 'torn knee ligaments' awaiting an ambulance. Awaiting an ambulance?!! We suggest someone lift him off the pitch, bundle him in the car and run him home to his mummy, but it seems he wants the full drama of flashing blue lights, stretcher, maybe a clap from the crowd. He doesn't respond as I recall a story about breaking my ankle at Hackney Marshes, hopping to Homerton hospital and going in to work the following day. The ref takes long draws on his cigarette and nods that the game will go ahead.

The game then followed the pattern of so many of our other matches this season; a blistering start, fabulous football, magnificent defending, winning back the ball, but once again, we were just unable to find the back of the net. Ekow done what Ekow does best, running the full length of the pitch time and time again, Marlais had one of his best games, tackling, pushing forward, battling a la Billy Bremner and Deniz found his stride with charges forward at every opportunity.

There was definately no shame in losing this game 1-0, to a side who haven't dropped a point in this divsion. And despite the slight disappointment, we left Market Road determined to put in a similar team performance next week in the cup.

We would be kidding ourselves if we said we were not disappointed losing this game. However, a first class team performance was all that really mattered tonight and despite losing the points, our U9's left the pitch at full time heads high and should be duly proud of the decent team work they exhibited. A little tweak here and there and our boys will be up there with the best of them.

Ritchie worked tirelessly as our central defender tonight, man marking the skillful Unity front man, as did Stanley who won the ball on many occasions and launched another Recreativo forward move. Harry played a blinder, taking on players, heading for goal. Yet try as we might, the ball simply would not go into Unity's net!
We left Market Road a little down, but certainly not too upset after a very good show from our lads. Back home (after a quick stop for fish and chips), to watch Barcelona-Arsenal in the Champions League and a simply beautiful show from the world's best footballer, Lionel Messi. It was mesmerising and a lesson to us all in how football should be played. To feet, on the floor, with skill and technique. Teamwork at it's best. Something that Recreativo should always try to emulate.

Rain. Snow. Cold. Rain. It's felt like winter has gone on forever. Just as the clocks change and give us an extra hour of evening light, the black clouds roll in over us and soak all expectations of a beautiful Spring evening. Some of us had been training in Holloway before the game, so arrived already soaked and cold. Still, nothing could dampen our enthusiasm for this encounter. The quarter final of the Cup and a dressing room bursting with excitement and noise was packed with players, parents, coaches and kitbags.
We began brightly, Rory standing out as our best player in the first half, chasing down every ball and trying to find Ekow with short, but accurate passes. Marlais and Sal both enjoyed forays into the Highgate half, but it wasn't until the second half that Ekow got the breakthrough after Kily's assist into the box. It was a fantastic game to watch, Recreativo's rousing charges forward cheered on by the crowd, the tense atmosphere of cup football adding extra spice to this match. Highgate got an equaliser with minutes to go after a deft chip from a free kick was headed home. The ref blew the whistle minutes later which meant the dreaded penalty shoot out!
After a few scored and a few missed, we managed to scrape through with Ritchie's sudden death spot kick. As always, the boys shook hands with the opposition after what had been a really great match. 100% effort from all our players tonight and we look forward to next month's semi final.

Hands up, nowhere to hide. We came crashing out of the Cup tonight, well and truly beaten by a better organised and stronger team. As much as we train, as much as we plan for these games, it sometimes seems impossible to keep up with the best of them. Still, we had our moments - some nice moves involving George, Waiel and Ollie. But our defending and marking from A Class's corners and set pieces was a little lax at times and we were punished for it.
Louis's rebound (from his free-kick) was superb, crashing against the A Class bar, but try as we might, nothing would go in. 5-0 was a little flattering in the end, but we shook hands as always and wished the opposition good luck in the semi final.

So the Cup dream is over for another season, but we'll be back next year putting in as much effort as we always do. Hang in their gang and let's concentrate on our next league game. It's been a tough season, but really enjoyable and a pleasure for all of us. Win, draw or lose, Recreativo Juniors will always keep looking forward.

It feels like Spring has finally arrived as we cruise towards Market Road. The windows are down, the sun is shining and sugary pop flows from the sound system, the boys singing along to JLS as the excitement mounts pre-match. We know we have a game on our hands against Crown & Manor, but dive headlong into it from the start and play some delightful football, a 'nothing to lose' attitude emanating from every Recreativo player. It's the business end of the season, but our carefree perspective of playing some good football and to hell with the actual result pays dividends as we enjoy large periods of play attacking the Crown goal.
Jaden charged up and down the right wing like a rampaging bull, crashing through anything that got in his way and winning every tackle. Andrew and Waiel linked well with flicks and tricks, bringing others into play. Unfortunately all our good work came to nothing as we failed to clear from our area and gifted Crown an easy goal.
It was real frustrating stuff because we really did deserve something from this game. We seem to play some of our best football against this league's better sides. The ref blew up five minutes early and also failed to notice that Crown & Manor played some of the first half with nine players on the pitch (instead of eight!), but despite everything seeming to be against us we were happy to be part of this fantastic game of football. Jaden's hard work, his tackling, his pressing and speed saw him rewarded with a great goal with a few minutes to go. We left with no points, but once again it was the effort and decent football that we played that meant so much to us tonight.

After such a great start to the season, we seem to have hit a wall. With our training having been ravaged by the bad weather, it was almost like we had forgotten how to play tonight. The difference between the two sides seemed to be summed up by Isledon's third goal, the result of a player pulling away from our defence and receiving a strong 15 yard pass and duly putting it into our net. We know we can play much better! Ekow's big strides were not even enough to drag Recreativo back into the game, however after he got a goal with ten minutes to go we did seem to lift our shoulders and give it a go. (Although it was a little bit worrying when subs come on in the second half unsure about what way we are kicking!!)
We have always said the first season is a chance to experiment, a chance for our players to experience the bright lights and find their feet in this tough league. At times we've been brilliant! At times we've been a little under par. But in every game our U9s have really given their all and that's what's really important.

We begin our midweek training sessions next week, a chance to put some drills into practice to recapture our early season form. We know we have it in us to get back to winning ways! Come on Recreativo - let's be having you!

With Pro Touch having been beat by everyone, thrashed 6-nil by Recreativo earlier in the season, this should of been simple. However, despite the scoreline, our opposition got a decent foothold in the game. We huffed and we puffed and even Waiel fluffed his lines in front of goal. Pro Touch could certainly pass the ball around, leaving us scratching our heads as to why they remain at the bottom of the league. A cursory glance at our own first season in the league reminds us what a tough first year it can be, having been battered black and blue by almost every team we played, so we wish them better luck next season and are sure they will be stronger.

In a game we should of cruised, we spent too much time chasing after the ball only to lose it cheaply once we had possession. Two goals from Waiel (one a fantastic header) and a very late strike from George sealed all three points for us tonight. Jaye, Lara and Francois formed a great defence and Kobi stepped in for Eren and had little to do all night. The scoreline flattered us really, but the sign of a great team is that they still win, even if they don't play that well. Simples!

With a slightly depleted squad (due to the half term break), nine players raring to go, it was with great disappointment that our opposition pulled out of this fixture on the day of the game. With too many players on holiday, Primrose would not be showing up, so a very easy three points for Recreativo. Not an ideal way to win a game, but it meant we could all be at home in the warm, waiting for the mystery of Archie Mitchell's murderer to be revealed on Eastenders. Who would of thought....? Stacey Slater!! Good on you girl!

RECREATIVO U11s 2-4 Crown & Manor 9.2.10

We rave on about Waiel and Louis, our attacking deadly duo, and rightly so...but this evening it was Jaye, Jaden and Francoise who put in a performance of heroic proportions. The Italians call it catenaccio (door-bolt), a defensive system of play made famous by Helenio Herrera who managed Inter and Barca (I desperately searched for his resting place on Venice's cemetery island once..but that's another story!-Jimmie). Employing a man-to-man marking system, the back line build a defensive wall that nothing gets through, knowing when to move forward, when to move back...blocking, jockeying, each defender moving like the links in a rusted chain.
We knew we were up against a fantastic passing team, a team who could really play. So our game plan put the emphasis on blocking out everything they did and would pick up any scraps we could on the break. And for the opening half that's exactly what we did, the Crown manager berating his team at half time, "Just look how they are defending, look how committed they are!". Waiel and Andrew got us two goals, of which the team should be proud. (Look at C&M's previous results C&M 7-0 Hampstead, C&M 5-0 Regents Park, C&M 5-1 Westway, unbeaten and flying high at the top of the table). So at 1-1 at half time, frustrated, they brought on a giant 11 year old (as big as some of us parents!) and needed a physical edge to get the advantage. And that's what beat us. We were under the cosh for the majority of the game, but left the pitch happy to have defended so well for long periods of the game and having scored two fabulous goals.

The most exciting game of the season so far? Probably. It had everything, goals galore, countless free kicks and then both the joy and misery of a penalty shoot out. Blimey, even the icy heavens opened up as the teams took to the pitch and giant snow flakes covered the ground, making it almost impossible to see the pitch markings. Cal put us 1-0 up, charging into Westway's box after good pressure from Ekow and bundled the ball across the line. An opposition equaliser was then doubled, then another which put them 3-1 up. But Recreativo weren't going to give up and fought back, winning a penalty (which Sal smashed home) and Joe volleyed home with two seconds left on the clock. Brilliant!

And so to penalties, the excitement almost unbearable as the snow blew even harder, the floodlights bright, parents and supporters huddled around the terrace. It was almost like neither team wanted to win as every strike hit the post or was saved by the keeper. However Ekow and Joe's penalties were enough to secure us a place in the second round. Thrilling stuff all round and a superb NEVER GIVE UP attitude from Recreativo tonight. Nice one lads!

Charlie George (Arsenal 1971), that Ronny Radford goal for Hereford (vs Newcastle 1972), Ricky Villa's amazing dribble and goal (Spurs 1981) and of course Gazza's free-kick in the semi (Spurs vs Arsenal 1991). Everyone has their special FA Cup moment. Those of us parents old enough to remember that before the Champions League, Sky Sports, the internet, 200+ tv stations and the Wii, the Cup was King! Most of us would not leave the settee all day as the tv build up on FA Cup Final day started at 9am (the highlights of which were FA Cup It's A Knockout, the teams leaving their hotels, the team bus arriving at Wembley and the home made banners and flags as the fans made their way down Wembley Way)...Aaahhh, the romance of the Cup! Happy days!
The beauty of Cup football has always been that everyone had a chance of winning it, your league standing and form going out the window in this one-off show down for Cup glory. Inside the Recreativo dressing room tonight we ask the players for silence and spend a minute just imagining lifting the Cup at the end of the season, instilling in the boys the belief that we can go all the way, that on our day we can beat anyone. And tonight we don't disappoint. A great performance by Recreativo saw us take a 2-0 lead, first Francoise and then Waiel putting us ahead. George had one of his better games, strong and determined. Ollie came on from the bench and played some beautiful one-twos with Waiel, his proud dad cheering him on as he set up our second goal. Despite a very late strike (an unstoppable volley that whizzed past our keeper), Recreativo's supreme hard work saw us into the hat for the next round. Brilliant. Who knows, maybe it's our year. Dare to dream.

We turn the music up in the car as we head to the match, the boys singing along to Florence & the Machine. "Sometimes I Feel like throwing my hands up in the air...I know I can count on you". Everyone is in a good mood, it's friday, school's out for the weekend and a full Recreativo posse are cruising up past the Emirates heading for a show down with league leaders A Class. Cars are parked as far as the eye can see along Market Road as players arrive from every direction to play out their games under the floodlights, parents and supporters out in force. Recreativo know they are up against a very good footballing side tonight and missing our best defender Jaye. Kobi stepped into central defence and was kept very busy by A Class strikers who were all over the place, hard to mark

and moving fast. He struggled to be honest, but after conceding a sloppy first goal, made amends by threading a through ball for Waiel to slot home. 2-1 down after another A Class effort was not closed down, Recreativo refused to lay down. With A Class's superior passing game stepping up in the second half, the Juniors rolled up their sleeves and dug in, defending like their lives depended on it and launching counter-attacking moves. This led to a high ball to Waiel who controlled it, turned on a sixpence and unleashed a Van Basten-like strike into the top corner. Simply the best goal of the season so far. Breath-taking! The final 15 minutes saw A Class come on strong, George switching to defence and Jaden's determination seeing out the game for a point apiece. A really good result and superb effort as always.

Hands in. "Who are we?"...."Recreativoooooo!!" The dressing room is loud and boisterous as the team spill out down the corridor, eager to get on the pitch and get playing. From the off the lads looked determined, positive attacking football the order of the day. We were wondering if it was going to be one of them days, as despite all our efforts, the ball just wouldn't cross the Hampstead goaline. First Ekow, then Ritchie put the ball inches wide. Finally the ball dropped for Stan who had to score, but as we jumped to celebrate, it hit the side netting as if an angel was guarding the opposition's

goal. Finally all our good work paid off, Ekow driving forward and bundling the ball home. 1-0. Deniz came onto the right of midfield with instant impact, 2-0. A well deserved win, a team of happy smiling faces and our first points in this top division.

Bridge just edged this. We can accept that no problem. A couple of tall talented strikers have given us the runaround on each occasion we have played them. But Waiel and Louis, our deadly pair, were just as much a threat tonight as whenever Bridge took the lead, Recreativo came back at them, matching them all over the pitch. Harry battled well against the opposition's right midfielder (class mate Benji), getting the better of him on several occasions and launching another Recreativo attack. Andrew gave as much as he could give, a midfield dynamo, strong and hardworking and George was as tough and determined as always and capped off a fine performance with a goal. We know it's not the Premier League, but were very disappointed with the ref tonight, failing to spot Bridge's hand ball (that led to one of their goals), getting countless decisions wrong and failing to stop the game when our players were writhing on the floor injured (resulting in our lowest mark ever for a referee on our match sheet). But we know that's all part of the game, victory or defeat, the highs, the lows, the roller coaster of emotions and having to deal with it all. And as always, at the final whistle we shook hands with everyone after a very good game of football, jumped in the car for a post match analysis on the way home and headed for the Golden Dragon fish and chip shop on Church Street. Not a bad start to the weekend.

The manager is running late, some of the players haven't arrived, one player's mum has packed his muddy football boots (and not his astros!) and it's raining that fine mist that gets you soaked without you even realising it. But, hey it's friday, the weekend starts here! It's football, football, football (two games tonight, Spurs vs Leeds saturday, training sunday morning, Recreativo senior match sunday afternoon and then in front of
the box for the Milan derby on sunday evening... ...phew!).Having lost the last match, the U9s went into this game with a little trepidation. But buoyed with Ekow and Joe's inclusion in the squad tonight, set about the game in an earnest and strenuous attempt to get some points. As always, the lads really put in the effort, but a couple of nippy Crown & Manor players forced their way past our defenders and went 2-0 up. A consolation goal for Recreativo was scant reward for our lads, but victory was edged by the team who had maybe, just maybe, had been the better team on the night.
